“Interview and Hire” jobs are entry-level positions that range from grades five (5) to eight (8). They are filled directly by individual State Agencies or facilities and do not require a competitive examination like most other State positions. The Comptroller of Maryland accepts applications for Interview and Hire positions on an ongoing basis and keeps them on file for a year. When a vacancy in one of the classifications occurs, the Personnel Office contacts persons with an active application on file. A list of the Interview and Hire classifications utilized by the Comptroller of Maryland and the minimum requirements for each classification are noted below. State of Maryland Standard Salary Structure, Fiscal Year 2012 Standard Salary Schedule - Effective July 1, 2011 (Annual Salary Listed).
- Building Security Officer Trainee, 4022/Grade 5 ($21,188 - $32,655): ability to read and write, six months of experience in building security work required; may require a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license; subject to call 24 hours a day.
- Building Services Worker, 4556/Grade 5 ($21,188 - $32,655): no experience or education required; may require a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license; subject to call 24 hours a day.
- Clerical Assistant, 1439/Flat Rate ($20,644): no minimum education or experience required.
- Computer Operator Trainee, 1040/Grade 8 ($25,239 - $39,287): High School Diploma or equivalency certificate, one year of experience keying large amounts of alpha, numeric or symbolic data into computer or onto magnetic tape or disk according to a production schedule, or one year of experience assisting in the operation of multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems to include the preparation of magnetic tape or other materials of computer input as well as the collections, control and disbursement of computer output.
- Data Entry Operator I, 0798/Grade 6 ($22,448 - $34,716) (Requires Typing Test): completion of the eighth grade; no experience required; ability to type a minimum of forty words per minute or 100 keystrokes per minute.
- Data Entry Operator II, 0799/Grade 7 ($23,796 - $36,928) (Requires Typing Test): completion of the eighth grade, one year of experience keying large amounts of alpha, numeric or symbolic data into computer or onto magnetic tape, ability to type a minimum of forty words per minute or 100 keystrokes per minute.
- Fiscal Accounts Clerk Trainee, 4516/Grade 6 ($22,448 - $34,716): High School Diploma or equivalency certificate; no experience required.
- IT Production Control Specialist I, 0432/Grade 8 ($25,239 - $39,287): High School Diploma or equivalency certificate; one year experience scheduling or setting up data processing jobs for production, controlling data input and output or maintaining a tape library for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers.
- IT Production Control Specialist Trainee, 0431/Grade 6 ($22,448 - $34,716): High School Diploma or equivalency certificate; no experience required.
- Office Clerk Assistant, 1373/Grade 5 ($21,188 - $32,655): completion of the eighth grade; no experience required.
- Office Processing Assistant, 1368/Grade 5 ($21,188 - $32,655) (Requires Typing Test): completion of the eighth grade; no experience required; demonstrated ability to accurately type a minimum speed of forty words per minute.
- Office Processing Clerk I, 1369/Grade 6 ($22,448-34,716) (Requires Typing Test): completion of the eighth grade, six months of experience OR five clerical courses in typing correspondence, reports, charts or other documents from rough draft, corrected copy, or oral instruction on a typewriter or on a computer keyboard; demonstrated ability to accurately type a minimum speed of forty words per minute.
- Stock Clerk I, 4565/Grade 5 ($21,188 - $32,655): no minimum education or experience required; may require a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.

Applications are also available at any local Department of Social Services. Alternatively, you can write to our office or call us to request an application. If the title on your completed application does not appear as listed above, you risk not being contacted for any future vacancy.
Step 2: Complete the Comptroller of Maryland Interview and Hire Application Supplement.
Step 3: Gather any documentation that supports you meet the minimum qualifications for the classifications for which you are applying, for example a copy of your HS diploma.
Step 4: Compile your application material for each classification and mail it to the following address:
